THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD Read Judges 3:1 through 4:24 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him (Judges 3:10). The story of Othniel began during a period of instability for Israel. Years before, Moses had warned of the dangers of idolatry. The Israelites fulfilled his prediction that they would foolishly follow false gods. The Canaanites taught the Israelites how to worship the Baals and Asherahs in the hope of increasing their harvests. The rituals failed to work. Their disobedience invited the anger of God. In time, the Israelites remembered God and cried out for deliverance. God provided the first of Israel’s judges, Othniel. But, God did more than call a willing servant—God equipped that servant with the presence of the Holy Spirit. With the Spirit’s help, Othniel led the nation to victory and a time of peace. When we are in trouble, we can call out to God. His Spirit can help us too. Thought for Today: The Spirit will help you when you are in trouble. Quicklook: Judges 3:7–11
