THE SQUARE RING March 21, 2014 By James Wellington Jeeves III VISIT keepboxing & Brookies Sports Bureau , Phuket Thailand It’s a fact of boxing life that if a fight doesn’t contain the names of either Pacquiao or Mayweather jr. it receives scant notice. The exception ? When there’s either something “dodgy” or “controversial” about the results. The latest to capture the dubious honor’s are a pair of fights on Showtime. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was headlining his first PPV card. He last out a loss to Mayweather. The opponent was the tougher than nails Alfredo Angulo (22-2) who was coming off a TKO loss to Erislandy Lara last June. Judge Marty Denkin had him ahead (86-83) while the two other judges had him trailing by a point when a cut eye called a halt. Angulo has shown plenty of pop with 18KO’s from his 22 wins. Alvarez’s loss to Mayweather (111-117, 112-116, 114-114) in September was his first taste of defeat so this was a form of redemption and a test of his PPV power. With a reported 350,000 PPV buys and a win it was a “win-win”. From the opening bell Alvarez came out winging punches which for the most part connected on darn near every part of Angulo’s body meeting little or no resistance. This was not the Angulo who had always showed power. His punches were more “pushes” than blows thrown with evil intent. Way ahead on the scorecards (89-82 twice and 88-83) referee Tony Weeks stopped things at the 47 second mark of round 10 . Of course Angulo complained as did some in the press. Nothing new with Referee Tony Weeks being unfairly criticized. Weeks did the right thing as Angulo did nothing to show that he was even interested in winning. Virgil Hunter, Angulo’s trainer, implored his boxer to “do something” to no avail. Better to stop a fight one second too early than one second too late. Angulo was more of a live punching bag than a competitive fighter. The days after the fight the Mexican boxing web “boxaldia” posted a story that Angulo and others were under FBI Investigation. TV Boxing expert Benny “I Keek a Touchdown” Ricardo passed on the following. “ Following the polemic ending between Mexican fighters Alfredo El Perro Angulo and Saul Canelo Alvarez, the FBI has intensified a very serious investigation that has taken months to detect any possible fixes within the professional boxing scene. Within the investigation is Angulos name, along with Shane Moseley, who incidentally also fought Alvarez. It is also known that other fighters like Victor Ortiz are part of the investigation centering around Golden Boy Promotion and its roster of fighters. A trusted source doing the investigation revealed to boxaldia that several fighters have been questioned by the FBI and have admitted to selling their fights and this Saturdays Angulo fight has intensified the investigation.” TME OUT. “Polemic” means controversial but is only used by someone that watch’s Bill O’Reilly for his word of the day. TIME IN: For those that waited a week to watch Alvarez-Angulo on almost free TV that drew 1.1 million they got the WBC/ WBA super lightweight title bout between Champ Danny Garcia (27-0) and Mauricio Herrera (20-2) . Garcia had been impressive with successive wins over Lucas Matthysse, Zab Judah, Eric Morales twice and Amir Khan. Herrera less so having lost 2 of his last 4. Add into the mix Garcia was fighting in Puerto Rico where his parents were born. Oh yes and Herrera had little power with only 7 KO’s from his 20 wins. Mr. Danny Garcia got his ass handed to him by the slick boxing Herrera over 12 rounds. The Square Ring is not usually a fan of “the slick boxing type” but Herrera was the exception. Not only did he have Garcia “bum fuddled” from the start but was almost impossible to hit. With Puerto Rico having only one current world champion the crowd was “over-the-moon” with joy each and every time Garcia tossed a punch. Most missed or were blocked. With WBC open scoring the judges scores were made available after rounds 4 and 8. The Lord of the Manor, the four Showtime TV guys and most anyone but Stevie Wonder were shocked that Garcia was winning the fight. 40-36, 39-37, 38-38 after 4 and 78-74 , 77-75 on two and trailing 77-75 on the other. In the end Garcia got a Majority Decision with Gustavo Padilla calling it a draw at 114 which is ludicrous at best. Then an early birthday present by Carlos Colon (Puerto Rico) and Alejandro Rochin (Tijuana) with a116-112 gift wrapped win. They should never judge another fight or even allowed to buy a ticket. Garcia said “I think making 140 pounds might have affected my performance a little bit. I need to sit with my camp and see if I should go up to 147 and start a new journey. ” Danny may want to revise his comments if he moves up he’d have to meet Mayweather jr., Tim Bradley, Juan Marquez and Manny Pacquiao. Only Mayweather is a Showtime fighter and he dam sure can’t beat him. The Blind Guy recalls talking to a former professional boxer who told him “Never take a fight in Puerto Rico against a Puerto Rican. You can’t win.” That recalls the time years ago when the Lord of the Manor was covering a fight in Thailand between a Thai and a Filipino. The Filipino almost knocked the Thai out in 6 of the 10 rounds except for the referee intervention. The Thai won a Unanimous decision which prompted the LOM to write, “The only way for a Filipino to beat a Thai in Thailand is to pull out a gun, shoot him dead in round one and then hope for a draw.” It was a busy night of boxing as Tomasz Adamek (49-2) faced Vyacheslay Glazkov (15-0) in a IBF heavyweight title eliminator. The Ukrainian battered Adamek from “pillar to post” earning a one side UD. Many boxing experts didn’t see this coming as Glazkov had only one notable “name fight” and that a draw against the 36-1 Malik Scott. That draw would be even less impressive as Scott got knocked out cold by Deontay Wilder (30-0) at the 1:36 of round 1 on the Garcia undercard. It was a one punch KO that could have been a replay of Clay-Liston punch from Lewiston Maine. As brilliant as this column is it will have no effect. In terms of changing boxing it will have the same effect as Obama on Putin. Hell pop two Coronas, fire up a cigar because Cheewit dee Khruo.
