THE STAGE IS SET FOR EKURHULENI’S ‘TOYI-TOYI’ DANCE THEATRE EXPERIENCE ‘TOYI-TOYI’ is a protest rhythmic dance which was popularly used by black South Africans as a medium to convey their opposition to the erstwhile apartheid regime. Now the dance has found new expression as a form of art. Via Katlehong Company, an organization based in Ekurhuleni collaborated with Hors Serie Company from France to form a TOYI - TOYI Theatre Production, which will seek to recite personal experiences of the artists during the apartheid era. The production has received support from the City of Ekurhuleni as part of metro’s commitment to promoting art in the region. “We are certain that the ‘TOYI-TOYI’ dance theatre experience will undoubtedly take theatre goers on a nostalgic journey by showcasing a blend of theatrical ingenious together with real life narratives,” said Ekurhuleni Metro Spokesperson Themba Gadebe. More importantly, the collaboration between Via Katlehong and the Hors Serie Company will also provide artists with workshops to equip them with advanced theatre skills.
