Baldknobber: The Movie Continues Production (Branson, MO) Production continues on Baldknobber: The Movie, an independent film of considerable scale. Executive producer / director Michael Johnson explains, “What began as a documentary concept was tranformed into a motion picture when we realized the scope of the history. We felt it was the best way to tell the story.” The film re-enacts historic events surrounding vigilante groups formed in Taney and Christian Counties following the Civil War. Elmo Ingenthron’s 1988 book Bald Knobbers: Vigilantes on the Ozarks Frontier has become something of a bible for the researchers involved in the film project, though other influences have impacted the direction of the film. “We looked for middle ground,” notes Johnson. “All of the characters are historic and many of their descendants still live here in the area. It was important to tell this story right.” For an independent film, the project is quite massive and includes over 80 speaking parts. Many of the actors are locals, though often with a background in stage, entertainment or media. Roles were filled by Mel Barber (Nathaniel Kinney), Keith Thurman (Alonzo Prather), Curtis Copeland (Robert Coggburn), Justin and Ryan Sifford (Yell and Jim Everett), Kevin Day (J.J. Brown), Ronnie Page (Douglas Mahnkey), Wayne Massengale (Sam Snapp), Larry Allred (Joe McGill), Josh Heston (Rick Doyle) and many others. All the scenes were filmed locally, in some cases on the very ground upon which the original events took place. “We have about 9 scenes left to shoot,” concludes Johnson. “I hope to host the premier in Branson and Springfield as soon as post production is completed.” Michael Johnson with Bear Creek Productions produced the History of Branson DVD (narrated by Ronnie Page) four years ago. Johnson’s daughter, Kimberly Barber, is a lead vocalist with Presleys’ Country Jubilee.
