THE STRONGEST MESH In every waking moment, of every single day We see and hear and feel, mankind’s madness on display Ubiquitous in all earth’s space, are atrocities and miseries Not germane to place or race, or those who know no luxuries It seems there are so many, who bask in bleak despair And then so many others, whose bad deeds all but rare In the midst of all this madness, is a most unusual bunch About life and living, they have a unique hunch For these there are few miseries, and no taste for atrocities They wish for others and themselves, a life that’s full of glee These sparse and shining members, of the human race Give hope and inspiration, while holding things in place You can find them anywhere, just not in numbers does fate yield At work at play and on the street, and even on the battlefield Without demand or persuasion, come one and sometimes many Seeking solace and clearing paths, from steadfast equanimity From a host of different ills and pains, none material or flesh That strange realm between the ears, requires the strongest mesh It seems the hordes of needy, remain steady and at full pace The woes and troubles found within, do not seem to abate And while a mass extinction of these afflictions, may not ever be The words and deeds of the just and fair, bring spates of tranquility And for the troubled many, soothed and treated by the few Come gifts of truth and wisdom, with no barter or notes due I cringe to think of what might be, without this righteous force Who through endless acts of virtue, help keep the rest on course And who are just enough in number, and also the right place To keep the world from tumbling down, with it the human race We should all extend a grateful hand, to our rare and unique friends And hope for more to come our way, so mankind can contend So when gazing up in wonder, at tall buildings from below Or when riding on an airplane, made of compost we just know Countenance the blessing, of what keeps such things in place And the science and genius of the makers, we most appreciate But it’s not carbon, steel or plastic, from which strength must refresh Compassion, love, and fortitude, still make the strongest mesh William K.
