THE SWORD OF CHRISTMAS Luk 2:34-35 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. KJV In the joy of Christmas, we often miss the fact that every step of the way was accompanied by deep personal pains. No one in the whole story had any idea how it will end. The question is why did God allow so much pain in such a beautiful story? The answer is found in James 1: 2-4. It is to reveal the true God-colours hidden deep in our lives. Just when we thought the story had climaxed and Jesus had been safely delivered, when we should see the young family settle down after the most incredible of events, Simeon shows up in the temple to dedicate the child God had destined to save the world. As he concludes the brief service, his attention is turned to the parents and this is how he blesses them, “yes, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also”. A sword in your soul is not a picture of Christmas, but it is the purpose of Christmas; to reveal your most hidden thoughts and to reveal the God in you. If your thoughts are godly thoughts then Christmas is for your rising. If your thoughts are evil, then when these awkward Christmas gift penetrates, you shall go down in a fall. Like James encourages us, don’t run away from the pains, he says “count it all joy” because the sword will drain out the evil of this world so that the love of Christ can find a place of abode in your life. Mary too was a sinner and needed the redemption of the saviour as much as anyone else. The sword of Christmas is to circumcise your heart. Until you encounter it and freely yield to its full working in your life, you don’t have a part in Christ. This is the circumcision we are called to – males and females alike. Have you received a sword in your heart? Prayer: God help me to yield to your circumcision. Purge my heart, my intentions and make me holy like the Holy child Jesus. Amen.
