THE South Australian government is moving against the elected chairman of the state’s remote Aboriginal lands, looking certain to win bipartisan support to amend legislation to suspend the APY executive board and appoint an administrator. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ian Hunter met yesterday with Liberal Opposition Leader Steven Marshall and opposition frontbencher Duncan McFetridge to set in train the legal process to effectively sack the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands chairman Bernard Singer and the eight-member executive, which governs a region of more than 100,000sq km in the state’s northwest. The move follows weeks of revelations by The Australian raising concerns about financial propriety in the taxpayer-funded management of the APY Lands.
