THE TERMITE The termite is an insect that is capable of destroying objects far more formidable and solid to the eye than it is. It has been known to reduce mountainous logs of wood to dust within a few days of burrowing and gnawing. Left untended, the termite has been known to bring roofing and foundations of a house crashing down. The termite is a destructive insect, only in the sense of the effects its lifestyle and living habits have on other living organisms around it – most notably, man. But the destruction of the termite is not mindless destruction; it is not even deliberate destruction. What man will see as destruction by the termite is survival to the termite. Wood, grass, leaves, and even trees or any object made from these materials, are what the termite must feed on to survive. Unfortunately for the termite, man also lays claim to wood, grass, leaves and trees. So, the battle line is drawn for an unequal war. An Unequal war it is, but not a totally conclusive one, because the termite accepts its fate as the underdog, but it never accepts that it is the looser. The termite also accepts this perpetual tug of war as part of its existence, so it never complains, it never gives up.
