THE TIMOTHY CAREY EXPERIENCE: In the late 1970s, when I was running Pasadena Filmforum, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting actor and filmmaker Timothy Agoglia Carey (1929-1994), who had already achieved cult status for his performances in films by Stanley Kubrick and John Cassavetes. Carey wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the extraordinary 1962 feature, “The World’s Greatest Sinner,” with a soundtrack by Frank Zappa. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, Carey would occasionally show the film at “midnight screenings” in the Los Angeles area. A friend of mine recalls seeing the film at the Cinema 21 on Washington Blvd. in Pasadena. Carey must have rented the theater for the evening, because he was selling tickets for the screening at the box office. DVDs of “The World’s Greatest Sinner” can be purchased online. The Dangerous Minds Web site has just shared links to a couple of clips from Carey’s appearances on Los Angeles public access television in 1989.
