THE TRIANGLE FIRE: On March 24, 1911, 146 workers and their families started the day like any other one. Many went off to work, others headed to a street corner market to buy food for dinner, still others hugged their young children, their sisters and brothers and headed off to meet their friends. Twenty-four hours later these workers and their families lives changed forever. For on March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Triangle Waist Company’s Asch Building in New York City. Unable to escape, these workers, mostly young immigrant women, died. Many leapt to their deaths because NYC fire ladders did not reach the upper floors of the building. Events inspired a movement for workplace safety and a crackdown on sweatshops. Too often though similar horrors confront todays Triangle workers. For more visit: Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition.
