THE VANITY OF IDOLS 1 Hear you the Word which the LORD speaks unto you, O House of Israel (“House of Israel,” is actually the Kingdom of Judah. It is called such being the only part of Israel that is left. “The LORD speaks unto you,” is not only intended to address Israel collectively as a nation, but also personally as to each individual): 2 Thus says the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. (“The way of the heathen,” actually refers to “the religion of the heathen.” “The signs of heaven,” refers, in this case, to the astrological calculations based upon extraordinary appearances in the sky, or the signs of the zodiac. Israel was commanded by the Lord to pay no heed to these things, because, in reality, they hold no answers whatsoever!) 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cuts a tree work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. (The word “customs” refers to the “images of wood,” i.e., “idols.” The word “people” refers to heathen nations.
