THE UGLY SIDE OF ALGAE Algae, a microscopic plant normally - TopicsExpress

THE UGLY SIDE OF ALGAE Algae, a microscopic plant normally found in ponds, lakes etc is believed by farmers to serve a very good purpose. In the presence of sunlight, the algae produces oxygen and sugar, thereby enriching the water with dissolved oxygen, promoting the metabolic activities of the fish, and fish health. However, most farmers dont know that the reverse process takes place at night, a process called Dark Phase Respiration. The algae consumes the dissolved oxygen and sugar and produces carbon (IV) oxide, depleting the oxygen level in the water. The aquatic animals begin to experience stress and may die if proper measure is not taken to ameliorate the effect. -Wale Gabriel Brand Head; MYRTLES FARMS
