In 1893, Colonel Buffalo Bill Cody, shown here, brought his outdoor extravaganza, Buffalo Bills Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World, to eastern Kentucky. It’s said that at a certain point during the Wild West show, Anderson Devil Anse Hatfield stepped out from the audience with his loaded Winchester lever-action repeater. He matched shots with the famous Indian fighter, buffalo hunter, and showman. As the audience cheered, the bearded Hatfield patriarch proved again his perfect aim! According to family history, the great Buffalo Bill was no match for the West Virginia bear hunter and feudist, Devil Anse Hatfield. —Reposted
