THE ULTIMATE NEW YEARS RESOLUTION Every person on the planet has some sort of pet sin. We each have what the writer of Hebrews called the sin that so easily entangles. It has reference to the one major blind spot that each of us has. It is the addiction that we are most likely to rationalize. It is the habit that we pass over as trivial - that actually has life-damaging consequences for ourselves and others. It may just be a negative attitude that we have erroneously integrated into our personalities. The first step in dealing with it has to do with admitting it. Lying to ourselves gets us nowhere. The second step is to discover what that sin does for us. For the vast majority, it is a substitute for something healthier - something that would benefit many. More than likely, it is attached to a wounded ego, that is trying to somehow feel better about itself. The last step has to do with admitting it and taking concrete steps to change. None of the steps are easy. Confession means to say with and has reference to admitting to ourselves what God and others already know. Addictiveness is about feeling invisible. It is pretending that no one sees or knows. It might well be that they dont, but the paranoia of they might carries its own miserable consequences. New Years is all about fresh starts. It is being able to imagine life without the sin that so easily entangles and then living it. What needs changing is probably not our weight. It is probably the most obvious lie we tell ourselves. The entangling sin can be an interesting journey into our cobweb of self-deceit. In Christ it is an education of the soul (and something ultimately forgiven), but not something we have to defend...not that we could anyway - we might as well toss it. It is a New Year. Time to clean the emotional/spiritual house! Dale Andrews © 2012
