THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AN EPITOME OF JUSTICE; FACT OR FALLACY?: With justification, d creation of d United States of America has been described as d greatest of all human adventures. As such, no other national story holds such tremendous lessons 4 d American people themselves & for d rest of mankind. As we Nigerians are seeking 2 build a strong & virile nation, we need 2 study d rapacious Americans, for if we can learn their lessons & build upon them, our dear country will benefit in d new age that has now opened upon us. It is high time that our policymakers realise that American history raises three fundamental questions. First, can a nation rise above d injustices of its origins &, by its moral purpose & performance, atone for them? All progressive nations are born of war, conquest, and crime, usually concealed by d obscurity of a distant past. The United States, from its earliest colonial times, won its occupancy in d full blaze of recorded history, and d stains on them are there for all to see & censure: the dispossession of indigenous people, and d securing of self-sufficiency through d sweat and pain of an enslaved race, from our Africa. However, it is generally believed that in d judgemental scales of history, such grievous wrongs must be balanced by d erection of a society dedicated to justice & fairness. Has d United States done this? Is she rendering to Africa d same level of assistance she had been giving to Europe? Has she expiated her organic sins? The 2nd question is: In d process of nation-building, can ideals & altruism- d desire to build a perfect community- be mixed with acquisitiveness & ambition, without which no dynamic society can be built at all? Have d Americans got d mixture right? Thirdly, d Americans originally aimed to build a worldly "City on d Hill" but found themselves designing a republic of d people, to be a model for d entire planet. Have they made good their audacious claims? Have they indeed proved exemplars for humanity? These core questions provide d key to our devt.
