THE VIEW FROM INSIDE The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department - TopicsExpress

THE VIEW FROM INSIDE The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is now in “phase 2” of its pilot Urban Farming program. First launched by Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins at the start of 2013, the Urban Farming program was created as a multi-faceted approach to employment and entrepreneurship for inmates at the Suffolk County House of Correction. Participants of the program are taught valuable skills in planting, tending and harvesting garden vegetables, which include (among many other vegetables): lettuce, beets, onions, squash, and several varieties of peppers and tomatoes. The Urban Farming program also takes a population that is often labeled “hard-to-employ” due to their CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) records, and provides participants with marketability and the ability to become entrepreneurs by growing and selling their own vegetables. In these photos, a participant of the program waters some of the greens in the planting beds and the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Vocational Education checks on the plantings.
