THE VIRTUES OF THE MONTH OF SHA’BAN Our mother Hz. Aisha said: “...I have not seen Resulullah fasting a whole month except Ramadan and longer in any month except Sha’ban.” Resulullah (pbuh) told to Hz. Aisha “Fasting in the month of Sha’ban is the most beloved one for me.” “Ya Aisha, Sha’ban is the month in which the name of those who will die in that month is given to death angel . I would my registered while I am fasting.” Our mother, Ummu Seleme (r.anha), informed that “Except for Ramadan, Resulullah (pbuh.) hasn’t fasted in any month as much as he did in Sha‘ban.” Resulullah (pbuh) said “Rajab is the month of ALLAH; Sha’ban is my month; Ramadan is my ummah’s month.” Sha’ban is the month, which expiates sins; Ramadan, however, is the month that eradicates sins.” This is the month, in which the gates of benevolence are opened, divine gifts send to earth, misdeeds abandoned, sins forgiven and a lot of blessing said upon the most precious of all, Resulullah (pbuh). As this is the case, Muslims should prepare for Ramadan by waking up from heedlessness, clean themselves up from sins, and repent their sins committed. In this month, we need to pay to Allah and try to get closer to Allah via the owner of this month, Hz. Muhammad (pbuh). We shouldn’t postpone these by saying that we will do them later as life on earth is three days long. One is yesterday and it is gone; it is the day from which lesson are to be drawn. Today is the other one and it is the day to act and to treasure. The last one is tomorrow; it is our objective and it is risky. You cannot know whether you will see it or not. As the days, so are the months. Rajab is past, it won’t return. Ramadan is future yet you cannot know whether you will live to it or not. Sha’ban, however, is a means between the two months. It is necessary that we deem this month as a precious treasure and be busy with worshipping. (Gunye- 339-342)
