THE VOICE OF GOD God spoke to him in a vision at night and called, ‘Jacob, Jacob’. Genesis 46:2 Often, after a major sporting achievement, the media says that "so-and-so has been called to greatness". Throughout the Bible God was calling people. He called Adam in the garden, Samuel in the temple, Isaiah in the midst of worship, Amos whilst he was minding the flock. And Moses heard the call at the burning bush. Jesus called the first disciples at the lakeside, Saul whilst he was on the road to Damascus, intent on murder. Always, God is a speaking, addressing, calling God. He calls by name, and he calls clearly and unmistakably. Sometimes he calls people from things. More often it is a call to something. One was a call to service, another a command to migrate. Some were called to speak, others were just summoned to obey. Nearly all of these calls came unheralded, out of the blue. Nearly all the calls changed the person on the receiving end forever. God calls the young. He calls the old. The rich, the poor, the sick, the whole, men and women, the clever and the dull. And he calls you, maybe for the umpteenth time, maybe for the first time. It is a commanding call that stops you in your tracks. It is an arresting call that commands your attention and demands your response. It is never a call to some trivial activity. He calls you to big things and makes heavy demands. It is a royal call that requires an answer. How will you reply? PRAYER THOUGHT: Lord, I hear your call. I am coming Lord, now to you.
