THE WELSH VAMPIRE... I tend to paint during the day, so all of my drawing is done of an evening. Lately Ive been listening to a great podcast called Monstertalk that is free to download from iTunes. In it informed skeptics discus a menagerie of cryptids like Sasquatch, the Lock Ness Monster, Chupacabra, Ghosts, Aliens, Werewolves and Vampires. Its entertaining listening and definitely helps with the painting. So I was well primed yesterday evening when I heard a sinister scratching coming from within the walls of the farmhouse! Our farm is old, very old and has seen much happenings over the years, naturally my thoughts instantly jumped to a host of strange phenomenon and interesting creatures. Luckily I had the cat to hand and he immediately pinpointed the source of the noises-a air vent at the base of a wall. Unscrewing the air vent and peering into the dark recess behind it I was confronted by a hairy face with piercing eyes-a bat! As I couldnt access the bat, who quickly crawled away, I closed up that room and after waiting perhaps 30 minutes we heard a soft thump against the kitchen door, the bat was on the move. It was pointless me trying to chase it down as I was worried about hurting it, so I just waited whilst the bat-a Pipistrelle bat, tired itself out flying laps of the house before landing on a curtain whereupon I covered my hand in my sock and caught him! The bat was then released into a clear night, no worse for being smothered in my sock for 30 seconds! I was rather disappointed that the creature wasnt a mystery criptid but pleased to have saved the bat (who must have been lost) from certain death in the wall cavity :)
