THE WEST VIRGINIA FALL You can feel it coming in the air, and from the new smells that now abound A chill awaits us in the morning, and a crisp coolness the nights have found And all the natives know the painter from above, will soon show off his artistry That will set the hills aglow with incandescent colors, and radiant diversity Each season has its own fine unequaled qualities, and I really love them all But there is something dear and very special, about the West Virginia fall School has now started and most small towns, are alive with prideful chatter Football season and the sound of bands, in West Virginia these things matter For men and boys fall brings hunting season, and through the hills shots ring out At days end you’ll hear talk and tales of hunter prowess, they all so proudly spout And as the painter works his magic on the steep hills, that are now his canvass The seasonal masterpiece that will soon be done, begins to show its splendor And then on one sunny chilly autumn morning, as you emerge from home The portrait that’s been made for us, has been signed and is now our own For all to share and see the glory of the art, and whose beauty trumps our ills A few weeks every fall to live in the colored rapture, of the West Virginia hills In these hills amidst the painted trees, sounds and smells of fall now fill the air Piles of leaves rustle on the ground, the last grass of summer now ensnared So for a short while each and every year, the mountains flex their ardent lights In a dazzling display of awesome nature, that provides to viewers much delight Now the leaves have hued to shades of gold, orange, and red, and many hues akin Those will soon be dead on the forest floor, clearing the canvass to use again Like the butterfly in summer whose elegance and beauty, is much too short lived The now fallen autumn leaves in their short time here, so much did they give The days are now shorter, and the morning and the evenings take on a stronger chill Early signs of the coming winter will soon emerge, and then converge upon the hills And before too long the leaves will be gone, and all the trees turned bare and gray Another wondrous autumn will have passed before us, like the passing of the day Even if a local or a visitor from afar, time is to fall the most sterling of all the thieves So take a walk or drive in these mystic mountains, and catch the fall before it leaves William K.
