THE WIND RISES-2014(PG-13)-April 5. By:The Movie Guy. In his final feature-length film, acclaimed Japanese writer & director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to author Tatsuo Hori & engineer Jiro Horikoshi for this true story of Jiro’s life. Jiro voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt wanted to make airplanes ever since he was a little boy & dreamed he was with his idol, the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni voiced by Stanley Tucci. Knowing that he is unable to fly an airplane because he is nearsighted, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 & becomes one of the world’s most innovative & accomplished airplane designers with the help of his colleague Honjo voiced by John Krasinski. Jiro earned the respect of prominent industry greats, including Hattori voiced by Mandy Patinkin & Kurokawa, voiced by Martin Short. With his skills, Jiro was sent to Germany to help design planes not knowing that they were going to be built for the upcoming war(World War II) with America. Director Hayao Miyazaki has created a breathtaking epic though time from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic & Japan’s plunge into war including the emotional love story between Jiro & Nahoko voiced by Emily Blunt, who he saves during the earthquake. The performances from the English-language version cast were amazing & well-done. The animation was beautiful, stunning & captured the feeling of the time period. There is something special about this kind of animated films that you don’t get when you see an animated film from the United States. My only problem with the film was that it wasn’t the original version. It is sad to know that this is the last animated film from Miyazaki & makes me want to see his early works to appreciate the talents of a gifted filmmaker. MUST-SEE FILM.
