THE, its a very short word, an adjective I believe. A sleepless night and TV for company and THE came along for the ride. Nostalgic it was too - I stumbled on to Channel 60 which hosts old movies and there was Vincent Price in those old horror movies that began with THE. THE House on the Haunted Hill, THE Bat and on and on through the night until eventually I remembered those 2 feature matinees at the Shore Theatre. THE Fly, THE Blob, THE Mummy and on and on the names passed through my memories. There were other adjectives in those days but none had the impact of THE. THEY tried a couple of times and the ever popular IT. I even had the pleasure of watching THE Tingler. In those days everyone sat with their feet off the ground as if that 6 legged crawler was real and would slip onto your spine and take over your body and mind. In a stroke of genius, which is what they used before the computer generated special effects, THE Tingler was immobilized by screams. So at the right moment reaching forward to the heretofore untouchable young lass in front of you and twitching the hair at the back of her neck would elicit - yes a scream. Ah, to those days of 10 cents to get in and 15 cent popcorn. Of floors sticky with spilled soda came from a machine that dropped into a paper cup (if you were lucky) and popcorn boxes sailing at the screen. Of the flash of light from behind the screen as someone had the temerity to open the fire door to let in a friend. The stern ushers with their caps and flashlights - who during the day shed their authority and were just fellow geeky students. Then the walk home, at first blinking at the sunshine then feeling the sun on your face and incredibly light on your feet a sprint towards home. If you were lucky and had raided the family change you might have enough to stop at Standard Drug and read comic books until they told you to buy one or leave. Oh the choices, a comic book or a vanilla phosphate? See, I have always had trouble with choices.
