THE parents of a young boy who died an agonising death were yesterday jailed for nine years. The boys stepmother, Sumairia Parveen, who had left her husband to set up home with her cousin, Abid Ikram, hated the 16-month-old she felt threatened their relationship. While lavishing love on her own daughter she caused or allowed Tahla Ikram to suffer weeks of abuse hoping he would be taken into care. And although the Crown initially maintained Ikram, 31, stood by and did nothing, the jury decided they were equally responsible. The child suffered a litany of fractures and bruises, was burned with a cigarette and had his leg sliced open, exposing tendons and veins. Londons Southwark Crown Court heard many of his injuries were ignored for days, causing him to scream in agony as his broken bones ground together. The couple, of Cheltenham Place, Ealing, west London, protested their innocence, but the jury unanimously decided they were lying. Parveen was convicted last month of causing or allowing the death - a relatively new offence designed to close a legal loophole that has allowed many parents of abused children to walk free as juries could not be sure who was responsible for a childs suffering. Ikram was found guilty of the same charge, as well as of perverting the course of justice for sending his lover to Pakistan after his sons death.
