THEN: One of the most recognisable football photographs ever, this shot of Prestons Tom Finney, dubbed The Splash, was taken by John Horton at a rain-sodden Stamford Bridge on August 25 in 1956. If you look carefully youll notice a player hidden within the spray – thats Chelseas full-back Wally Bellet. The moment has since been immortalised in bronze at Prestons Deepdale stadium. NOW: Theres not a chance these days that Stamford Bridge could get so water-logged. The current pitch – made using the Desso GrassMaster system which incorporates artificial fibres into the playing surface – was installed in the summer and features new under-soil heating and irrigation systems (17 miles worth of old systems had to be dug up). Despite being a hybrid surface, plastic only makes up 3% of the total pitch area. Chelsea donated the previous seasons pitch to Aldershot Town FC.
