THEORIES OF LEARNING (THE NEXT GENERATION) FALL 2014 SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES EDWARD WATERS COLLEGE PROFESSOR FLUELLEN COURSE DESCRIPTION By 2025, EWC will have become a national leader for innovative teaching and learning. That strategic vision provides both direction and a time horizon for its achievement. One small step for creating innovative teaching and learning is “Theories of Learning: The Next Generation.” An upper level psychology course, Theories of Learning (ToL) 2014 features Harvard University Project Zero Research Center’s Teaching for Understanding framework (TfU), Howard Gardner’s MI approach and big ideas from Temple University’s program for innovative teaching and learning in higher education. TfU frames the big picture for learner-centered instruction in the environment of game-based learning and self regulated learning. The MI approach features activities soaked in Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory. Each session has a point of entry, powerful metaphor and multiple representations all aligned with the course goal: “synthesize big ideas of MBE science research.” And, finally, one of the big ideas from Temple University’s program is the “writing/thinking intensive” classroom. Learners engage writing and thinking games daily as well as four writing/thinking intensive graded experiences. While every class provides opportunities for assessments of understanding, the four graded experiences tell the story of individual and whole class achievement Vis a Vis the course goal of synthesizing.
