THERE IS A FARCE going around. It states that if businesses get tax breaks then theyll hire more people. Another version is, if you hike the minimum wage then businesses will lay off people. But the FACT of the matter is that businesses hire people ONLY when they need them. And they hire regardless of what it costs. Either they need workers or they dont. No business hires simply because they want to be nice and provide jobs. They hire only when they need to do so. Period. Weve seen all the tax breaks given to big corporations, and yet they STILL dont hire. Only the high tech sector is hiring these days, and the reason is not any benevolence; its because they NEED the workers - at any price. So, tech workers are getting paid well. This will happen no matter how many tax breaks SF mayor Ed Lee gives to Twitter, Zynga, etc.
