THERE IS GREATNESS ON THE INSIDE OF YOU HUMILITY IS THE KEY THAT BEGINS TO UNLOCK IT You give me your shield of victory; you stoop down to make me great. This is 2 Samuel 22:36 from the NIV (1984) version. For stoop down, other translations say your help or kindness or gentleness has made me great. 2 Samuel 22 is titled in my Bible version, Davids Song of Praise. David is reflecting over his life and praising God for all the victories he has seen and for Gods faithfulness. Then in verse 36 praises an aspect of Gods character which we normally might not consider: His humility. God humbled himself so to speak - stooped down from His throne to pick up a young shepherd boy tending his fathers sheep and make him a great king. What an amazing proclamation of praise David is giving God here. The word in the Hebrew is anavah meaning gentleness, help, humility, meekness. The humility in Gods character connected with the humility in a young David. He was a man after Gods own heart. God didnt look at the outward appearance - no, He looked at the heart of David is what the Scripture says. I distinctly remember Dr. C. Peter Wagner a number of years ago joking that his book titled Humility was one of his worst selling books. Nobody was interested in reading about humility he said. And yet there are so many Scriptures dealing with humility and meekness. The root Hebrew word for meek or meekness is anav meaning poor, afflicted, humble, meek. It is the root of anavah mentioned earlier. By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honor and life. Proverbs 22:4 The meek/humble shall inherit the earth. Psalm 37:11 Perhaps this is an area church, that we really need to pursue a greater revelation and understanding in, so that we may actually also see if we are walking in this dimension of Gods character. It is a connecting point for heaven to earth - for God to connect with you to stoop down and make you great. Didnt He already prove how much He wants to do this for you by humbling Himself in Christ to redeem us back to Himself? Philippians 2:1:11 Humility - not a very popular subject for some, but a key to greatness for others.
