THICK CLOUD: Dust spreads as blasted boulders rumble and tumble down the mountain. —Photo courtesy heather-dawn herrera A descendAnt of First Peoples ancestry looks up at the Mountain of Many Waters, or what is now left of it. At his feet, the life of the mountain gushes down a steep man-made gully, draining years of future storage into history. At the base of the mountain, relics of former vibrant villages are washed away among the debris and silt that now composes the river bed.A thick cloud of dust spreads northwards up the valley as a rumble and tumble of boulders crash down the mountainside. The dust settles on the verdant vegetation that the valley is famous for. Citrus and other produce on estates are covered in a thick film. Our descendant tries to throw his voice above the din of this highly active quarry but gives up after a while. The western flank of Chaguaramal, our third highest mountain, is being quarried away at a rapid rate to satisfy the high demand for limestone also called blue stone.
