THIEVES DRUGGING PET DOGS FOR FOOD ATTACKED BY ANGRY MOB. Sanjiang Village near picturesque Guilin, in Guangxi (South China) was the scene of two brutal events last week: (1) an all-too-frequent incident of dog nappers drugging and stealing dogs (many pets) for the dog meat trade, and (2) the rare but likely to increase incident of angry pet owners mobbing these gangsters and viciously beating them and destroying their car. Arguably, a vigilante mentality thrives when lawmakers refuse to address the issue of animal protection, encouraged in their idleness by a largely uneducated mass of vocal opponents who misguidedly feel resources dedicated to protecting animals from cruelty and punishing offenders takes away from helping needy people in an obviously needy place. Social unrest on behalf of animals could be the tipping point, but its a risky and controversial tool that could still backfire on animal advocates in China.
