THINGS BRITISH The Courtauld Institute An art gallery in London open to the public and famous for its collections of Italian paintings, English and Dutch portraits and Impressionist and Post-impressionist works. It grew from the paintings left by the industrialist Samuel Ccourtauld (1876-1947). Covent Garden 1. Londons wholesale fruit, flower and vegetable market, formerly in central London, but in 1975 moved to new buildings (New Covent Garden Market)south of the Thames. In 1980 the restored buildings of the old market were opened as a complex of shops, cafes, and promenades, with the former market housing the Museum of London Transport. [Formerly convent garden, as the market was on the site of the garden of a convent attached to Westminster Abbey.] 2. The name used for the Royal Opera House, which is near the former site of the Covent Garden Market in central London.
