THINGS TAX PREPARERS WISH YOU WOULD DO BE A MODEL CLIENT Create a file for each years tax return data. This can be a plastic-sectioned accordion file or something as simple as a manila folder. Set up a tax return data file at the beginning of the year and put information in it throughout the year as events occur. Receipts for items you plan to deduct should go in this file, receipts for property tax payments and transaction receipts for sales of stocks and bonds. Then, before you meet with us, group similar items together, and if you have a lot of receipts, add them up and write the totals in the file. DONT GIVE US A BOX/BAG/ENVELOPE OF RECEIPTS Going through your information and adding up the numbers is your job. But if you do give us a pile of papers, realize that in most, if not all cases, youll be charged more for the additional time required to dig through and organize it. GIVE ALL OF YOUR PAPERWORK TO US AT ONE TIME Bringing it in piecemeal isn’t great. But if you have everything except one or two pieces of information and feel you need to get everything to us now, write a note and let whomever is doing your taxes know whats missing. Otherwise, we’ll waste time looking for it, and that will likely result in a higher fee for you. GET YOUR PAPERWORK TO US EARLY! February is fantastic. Before March 15 is fine. If you give us your material after March 15, dont be upset when you end up having to file an extension. TALK TO US THROUGHOUT THE YEAR You should definitely check in with us before you get married, divorced and certainly before you buy, sell or rent property. You should be calling for your appointment RIGHT NOW!
