THINGS THAT ARE OVER AND DONE WITH The law and the prophets were until John.... (Luke 16:16) When someone asked where in the Gospels we are taught that the Old Testament Law is nullified, I responded that... a) Nowhere is it nullified. In Matthew 5:17, our Lord says He did come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it. b) In Luke 16:16, Jesus says, The Law and the Prophets (i.e., the Old Testament) was until John. Since then, we are all about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Law and the Prophets are over and done with. New Testament believers are under no obligation to slaughter animals for sacrifices, observe the Jewish holy days, give tithes of various increases, or to be circumcised. The Law was our schoolmaster, to bring us to faith (Galatians 3:24-25). It has done its job. In the movie Saving Mr. Banks, the author of the Mary Poppins books, P. L. Travers (Emma Thompson), deals with Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) about the way Mary Poppins is portrayed in the movie he had just produced. Oh, Mr. Disney, we have much work to do on this, she said following the premiere. Disney, at wits end with this exasperating lady, said, Pamela, that ship has sailed. We appreciate the Law of the Old Testament. But it did its job in bringing us to faith in Jesus Christ. Now that He has come, we will not be needing the O.T. Law any more. It has not been abolished or nullified, but--like the six ceremonial water pots at the wedding of Cana of Galilee (John 2)--it has been filled up and set aside. Its through. We will not be offering up continual sacrifices, not in a temple courtyard nor in a mass. For by one offering, He has perfected forever those who are saved. And this: When this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God (Hebrews 10). As He uttered from the cross, It is finished (John 19:30). Over and done with, never to be repeated. Thank God! Salvation is the finished work of Christ.
