THINGS THAT MATTER: This morning the dogs got me up earlier than usual—4:00, because they needed to go outside. When I stepped out the back door I saw another beautiful moon lit-sky. So bright that my shadow was clearly visible on the ground. Our house is far about 15 to 20 miles from the nearest town and we can’t even see any of our neighbors, so it was quiet—so quiet I could hear only quiet. That is until a, a loon started making plaintive calls somewhere off in the distance--and then it became totally quiet again. No cars, no people, no internet, just a window into the universe. As I stood there, I wondered how many people throughout history had looked at that same moon, the same stars and been so mesmerized by the wonder of it all. Sometimes, when I was still working and had to get up early for the drive, I would get a glimpse of such scenes, but it was only an appetizer, not the meal. Now I have time to drink in, what I could only sip. The celestial bodies still hold mystery for me, the constellations, moon phases and the Milky Way. This morning I thought again about the things in life that matter, faith, family, friends and appreciating the simple things in nature that are presented to us every day, if we only are able to take time to look and appreciate. I am glad I have had this moment and now look forward to dawn and a new day.
