THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX - This is a little 8x10 I did in about 20 minutes just to demonstrate some of the advantages of working on a toned canvas. I started with the whole panel primed with a coat of my WB BLUE MOON Background Color (Gesso). When dry, I applied a thin coat of my WB Clear Glazing Medium. Because youre not constantly working into wet background colors, your applied colors stay crisper and brighter. (Can you say, Whiter clouds?) Would you believe me if I said there was NO BLUE applied to the mountain? There wasnt! I removed the mountain base color to expose the blue shadow tone underneath. I used my Wipe-Off Tool as well as a towel dampened with a bit of thinner. Same goes for the tree shadows falling on the meadow. I painted the white snow AROUND those shadows, letting the blue gesso do the job. Why? I did it for color harmony. Notice how the whole piece just exudes and permeates blue? It establishes a certain mood through continuity, because the same tone is woven throughout. Try a toned canvas and see what you can come up with! Youre only limited by your imagination.
