THIS DATE IN MUNICIPAL STADIUM HISTORY OCTOBER 3 1965--The Chiefs made it 3-for-3 in home openers with a 27-17 win over the Boston Patriots. It was the first time in team history (I dont count the Dallas Texans years, by the way) that two defensive scores were made in one game, the first being a 36-yard interception return by linebacker Bobby Bell and the other being a 37-yard INT return by defensive back Willie Mitchell. Jim Nance (not to be confused with CBS play-by-play man Jim Nantz) scored two touchdowns for the Pats. A--26,773. 1972--The Royals lost for the final time and the Texas Rangers won for the final time ever at Municipal Stadium, blanking KC 3-0 in the next-to-last sporting event ever played at 22nd & Brooklyn. Mike Paul and Bill Gogolewski combined to shut out the Royals and give Texas manager Ted Williams his final career win ever. It was a bad day all around for Royals manager Bob Lemon, who not only suffered his final loss as Royals manager, he lost his job too (earlier in the day), but was allowed to finish out the string. Steve Busby suffered his first Major League career loss, despite only allowing two runs in six innings of work. Richie Scheinblum played in the final game of his first stint as a Royal that night (he returned briefly in 1974). Dick Billings of the Rangers scored the final opponent run ever at the stadium in the top of the 9th inning, on an RBI single by Bill Fahey. Cookie Rojas played in his final game at the ballpark before just 6,075 fans, the 8th-smallest Royals crowd ever at 22nd & Brooklyn.
