THIS DATE IN MUSIC HISTORY (January 22nd): 1931: Sam Cooke was born -- he was shot to death, at age 33, by a motel manager in Los Angeles -- the shooting was ruled a justifiable homicide 1953: Steve Perry (Journey, vocals) was born 1959: Alone in his New York City apartment with an acoustic guitar, Buddy Holly made his last recordings (a little less than two weeks before his death) -- they would be posthumously overdubbed and eventually released (the recorded songs included Crying, Waiting, Hoping and Thats What They Say, among others) 1966: The Beach Boys recorded Wouldnt It Be Nice -- it would become the opening track for Pet Sounds 1967: The Monkees completed their first live performance at San Franciscos Cow Palace -- it was sold out 1969: The Beatles begin recording Get Back at Apple Studios with Billy Preston 1972: American Pie begins a seven week run at #1 on the US album charts for Don McLean
