*** THIS DATE IN #REDS HISTORY! APRIL 25 *** April 25, 1977 - George Foster has seven RBI, five runs, two home runs, a double and a single in the Reds 23 - 9 victory over the host Atlanta Braves & future Hall Of Famer Phil Neikro. Cincinnati ties a National League record by scoring 12 runs in the 5th inning off three Braves pitchers. Recall this game well, it ended up being kind of a famous game nationally, i remember a Sporting News article about it and how devastating the Reds offense led by George Foster was already in 1977. This is a beautiful boxscore! baseball-reference/boxes/ATL/ATL197704250.shtml And the rest......... April 25, 1999 - Jack McKeons Reds win a slugfest at Cinergy 7-6, 2B Pokey Reese homers, CF Mike Cameron hits a triple and steals 2 bases. Starter Pete Harnish gets the Win, (6 IP, 5 ER) Rookie Scott Williamson,(3 IP, 1 ER) the Save. Cincinnati record stands at 7-10. That would turn around eventually. Lol baseball-reference/boxes/CIN/CIN199904250.shtml April 25, 1990 - Cincinnati defeats Philadelphia 12-7 to run their season record to 10-2. Todd Benzinger and Chris Sabo each scored three runs to go along with three hits. Mariano Duncan also added three hits and three RBIs. baseball-reference/boxes/PHI/PHI199004250.shtml April 25, 1976 - Lefty Ace Don Gullett whitewashed the helpless Expos 7-0 in Montreal, with a 6 inning effort & Pat Darcy finished his shutout with 3 innings for the Save. This game was somewhat famous in that seasons highlights as Sparky ran out of catchers and stuck joel youngblood behind the plate. I was watching this game on WLWT5 that day (a day game on a sunday!) and it was hysterical, very comical. The Announcers were beside themselves. Johnny Bench had homered, but left game after 8 innings, as it became a blowout...so Bill Plummer pinch hit for Bench in top of 9th and struck out, called looking, and Plummer quickly became part of a heated argument with the home plate umpire, who tossed him, without him ever taking the field on defense! ..who would catch? There is no one....There was a long delay with sparky talking to umpires & thats when 25th man Joel Youngblood ran back behind the plate. I never forgot this game. He did pretty well too! baseball-reference/boxes/MON/MON197604250.shtml April 25, 1970 - Reds Ace Jim Merritt (8 IP, 2 ER) outduels future Hall Of Fame lefty Steve Carlton (7 IP, 3 ER, 6 Ks, 7 BBs) by score of 3-2 in St. Louis. REDS Home Run by Bobby Tolan (2 RBIs) powers the offense. Wayne Granger with the hold, 19 year old Don Gullett with the save. Merritts record goes to 4-1 on the way to a 20 Win season. Sparkys 1st REDS team is 14-5 on the way to the 1970 NL Pennant. baseball-reference/boxes/SLN/SLN197004250.shtml April 25, 1958 - Reds-killer Roberto Clemente once again commandeers Crosley Field; his first home run of the season gives Pittsburgh a 4 - 3 win over Cincinnati. Clemente is in on all the scoring, carrying home the tying run in the 6th and, one inning later, putting Pittsburgh ahead for good with a three-run shot. Redlegs third baseman Don Hoak is eaten alive by Clementes 6th-inning leadoff smash, the latters crazy carom affording Clemente a hustle double. One ground ball and one fly ball later, Roberto is in with the run that cancels out George Crowes 2nd-inning homer. The tie will last exactly one inning and, even then, only because of Clementes arm, whose mere presence prevents Frank Robinsons 7th-inning double from scoring speedy Vada Pinson from first with the tie-breaker. The 1 - 1 tie thus secured, Clemente climaxes the bottom of the frame with a 2-out, three-run, 400-foot blast to right center, supplying the remainder of Pittsburghs offensive output, just enough to outlast Cincy. baseball-reference/boxes/CIN/CIN195804250.shtml April 25, 1957 - The major leagues adopt a new rule that prohibits baserunners from interfering with batted balls in the field of play. The rule is adopted in reaction to recent actions by several Cincinnati Redlegs baserunners. Earlier in the week, Don Hoak and Johnny Temple had intentionally interfered with batted balls as a way of preventing double plays. -- and the Reds win that days game 6-3 over Cubs at Crosley Field. Brooks Lawrence goes the distance with a complete game. The aforementioned 3B Don Hoak has 3 RBIs. baseball-reference/boxes/CIN/CIN195704250.shtml April 25, 1939 - Whitey Moore Hurls a complete game (1 ER, 7 Ks) & SS Billy Myers Homers (3 hits, 2 RBIs) as Reds thump Cardinals 5-1 in St. Louis @ Sportsmans Park. Reds start 1939 season 3-1. baseball-reference/boxes/SLN/SLN193904250.shtml April 25, 1919 - Reds starter Hod Eller confounds the St. Louis Cardinals @ Redland Field, 5-1, going the distance for complete game mastery. (9 IP, 8 Ks, 1 ER)...Cincinnati starts season 3-0 on the way to a World Championship. baseball-reference/boxes/CIN/CIN191904250.shtml BONUS GAME : April 25, 2013 - Gio Gonzalez allows just one hit in 8 innings as the Nationals beat the Reds, 8 - 1. The only hit is a solo homer by Joey Votto in the 4th. Denard Span and Danny Espinosa drive in three runs each for the Nats, while Bryce Harper hits a solo homer. Rafael Soriano adds a hitless 9th inning for a combined one-hitter. baseball-reference/boxes/WAS/WAS201304250.shtml #Reds Transaction Wire for 4.25 April 25, 2012 - Cincinnati Reds signed Koyie Hill as free agent.
