This couldnt have come as a worse time for Johnny, he had stopped catching, was playing first base and hitting for a very high average....as i recall from that time, he was pretty much platooning with Dan Driessen, then Driessen got hurt as he often did, but didnt matter, johnny was very close to outright stealing dannys job....bad break.
