THIS DAY IN ARKANSAS WEATHER HISTORY... 1880-Moderate to heavy snow fell in much of western and central Arkansas, with 6.0 inches at Mount Ida, and 9.4 inches at Little Rock. The next morning, under a clear sky and snow cover, Mount Ida dropped to –6, which was the lowest temperature on record in the month of November in Arkansas, and Little Rock dropped to 10 degrees above zero, which was the coldest November temperature on record at the station. 1891-The temperature dropped 52 degrees in 17 hours at Madding (Jefferson County) after a severe hail storm. The temperature dropped from 78 degrees at 4 PM on the 16th to 26 degrees at 9 AM on the 17th after the passage of a strong cold front. 1921-A tornado struck Polk County, with eight fatalities at Wickes. Another tornado tracked from near De Gray in Clark County into the southeast portion of Garland County. There were three fatalities with this storm. Neither tornado produced a continuous damage path, touching down and lifting several times before the parent storms dissipated. 1938-A tornado struck Benton County, and was on the ground for about five miles near the Elkhorn community 7 miles northeast of Rogers. Three homes were damaged, and many trees were uprooted. High winds produced damage in the Centerton community in Benton County. In Pangburn in White County, farm buildings were damaged with one person injured. 1952-At around 4:30 PM, a tornado struck 10 miles west of Mena in Polk County, and produced damage over a 40-mile path which ended about 5 miles north of Pleasant Valley in Scott County. In Polk County, two barns were destroyed, and timber was damaged. Damage in Scott County was worse, with one home destroyed and 12 houses damaged. Considerable damage occurred to timber, and several farm animals were killed. Two people were injured in the destroyed house. 1980-Two to five inches of snow fell in the higher terrain of the Ozarks.
