THIS DAY IN ARKANSAS WEATHER HISTORY... Dec. 25 1819-A white Christmas was recorded at Arkansas Post during the first year of settlement. 1821-The Arkansas River was frozen over at Little Rock, so much so that people safely crossed the river on foot. 1913-12 inches of snow fell at Hardy. 1962-Light snow fell in most of the state. 1975-Heavy snow fell in the north and west with 12 inches at Buffalo Tower and 14 inches at Waldron. 1980-An Arctic outbreak affected the state, with lows around zero in the north and single digits and teens in most other areas. 1983-Most lows were below zero in northern and central sections, with 0 to 5 above in the south. Deer fell to -13 degrees. 2009-7.5 inches of snow fell at Saint Paul. 2012-Through the 26th, Record snow fell on top of some light freezing rain in much of western, central, and northeast Arkansas. In northeast Arkansas, winds gusted to 30-40 MPH, creating near-blizzard conditions (the first time since 1966). 17.5 inches of snow fell at Perry in Perry County. Many locations saw the snowiest December on record, just from this one storm. The ice and heavy snow downed trees and caused widespread power outages, especially around Little Rock. Dec. 26 1838-Two inches of snow fell at Fort Smith. 1878-Three inches of snow fell at Russellville. 1916-A tornado caused damage from Leola to Des Arc with 17 dead. 1983-An ice storm mainly affected the south. 2000-The second major ice storm in two weeks hit the state, with west central portions the hardest hit. Severe timber damage occurred in the Little Rock and Hot Springs areas.
