THIS DAY IN ARKANSAS WEATHER HISTORY... Jan. 1 1860-The temperature fell to 6 at Yellville. One inch of snow fell at Washington. 1864-The temperature fell to -12 at Fort Smith. 1868-A snowstorm which began on the night of December 31st dumped four inches of snow at Little Rock. 1895-Two to four inches of snow fell in much of northern, western, and central Arkansas through the 2nd. Dardanelle saw seven inches over a 2-day period. 1916-Prohibition began in Arkansas with warm weather and heavy rainfall. 1952-High temperatures were mostly in mid 70s to lower 80s. 1974-Low temperatures were in single digits and teens, with highs in the teens and 20s. This continued through the 3rd. 1979-A statewide ice storm occurred. The northwest was the hardest hit. 1996-Heavy snow fell in the northwest and north central portions. Amounts ranged from two to six inches, with isolated reports of 8 to 12 inches. This lasted into the 2nd. 1999-A significant ice storm occurred in northern sections with lesser ice accumulations into central sections. There was major tree damage in the north. Jan. 2 1897-Tornadoes touched down at Benton and 10 miles north of Texarkana, killing one person at each location. 1907-Five to seven inches of rain fell in an area from Hope to Little Rock. 7.30 inches fell at Malvern through the 3rd. 1968-A period of icy weather began in north central Arkansas and lasted through the 13th. 1974-An ice storm occurred in southern Arkansas, which lasted through the 3rd. The heaviest damage was in Bradley, Drew, and Desha Counties. 1977-One to three inches of snow fell in the north, and there was an ice storm in the southeast. 2003-A mostly one to three inch snowfall occurred in the northwest and north central portions. Four inches fell at Melbourne. 2008-Sea-level pressures were mostly above 30.80 with a few locations at or above 30.90. The pressure rose to 30.91 at Little Rock, which was the highest since December 1989. Jan. 3 1877-The temperature fell to -4 at Little Rock. 1878-Eight to nine inches of snow fell from western into central and eastern Arkansas. 6.3 inches of snow fell at Judsonia, with 5.0 inches at Little Rock. 1949-Tornadoes touched down at Warren and in Union County with 57 dead. There were also tornadoes from Arkadelphia...to Congo...to Pinnacle Mountain. 1971-A tornado touched down near Hollywood in Clark County, and continued for 12 miles, injuring 10. 1980-Two to six inches of snow fell in the northwest. 1982-Tornadoes touch down at Marianna and Helena. 1985-Heavy snow fell in the east, with 11 inches at Monticello. 1987-One to four inches of snow fell in most of northern and central Arkansas. Eight to ten inches fell in the extreme northeast. 2000-Several tornadoes touched down in north central and northeast Arkansas. Jan. 4 1831-15 inches of snow fell in Washington County, while Little Rock picked up six inches. 1864-An Arctic outbreak which began in late December 1863 covered state as the Union Constitutional Convention began. 1884-The temperature fell to -19 at Fayetteville. 1922-A tornado touched down at Fallsville, killing three, and near Jacksonville, killing two. 1950-An Arctic front moved through state dropping temperatures from the 60s and 70s to the 20s and causing an ice storm in the north. Jan. 5 1878-The temperature fell to -5 at Little Rock. 1884-The low temperature fell to -16 at Fayetteville, and -15 at Dodd City (Keesees Ferry). 1910-Snow fell in most of the state, with six inches at Little Rock and more in the Ouachitas. 1924-Record high sea level pressure at Little Rock...30.98 inches. 1960-Heavy snow fell mainly across central Arkansas. Little Rock received 11.6 inches and the heaviest snow fell from Waldron to Brinkley. The total snowfall at Benton amounted to 13.6 inches. 1977-One to five inches of snow fell in the north. 1998-Heavy rains cause some flooding. The Madison County sheriff drowned when his car was swept off a low water crossing.
