THIS DAY IN ARMOR/CAVALRY HISTORY: 1920 – The National Defense Act of 1920 abolished the Tank Corps and placed tanks under the infantry while simultaneously creating the Office of the Chief of Cavalry. Major General Willard Holbrook became the first Chief of Cavalry on July 1, 1920. The Chief of Cavalry position would be eliminated in 1942 along with the other combat arms chiefs. Count Casimir Pulaski has always been referred as the “unofficial” first Chief of Cavalry. He was appointed “Chief of Horses” in September of 1777.
