THIS DAY IN CLEVELAND/OHIO STATE SPORTS HISTORY: July 5, 1947 -- Larry Doby signs with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first black player in the American League. Doby, a former star in the Negro leagues, takes the field for the Tribe against the Chicago White Sox later that same day, entering the game as a pinch-hitter in the top of the seventh inning at Comiskey Park in Chicago. While Doby struck out in his first major league at-bat, his appearance in the game broke the color barrier in the American League and forever changed the game of baseball.
