THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 2nd January 2005 (by Amma Fosuah Poku) Ruth Chinamano a prominent activist in then struggle for Zimbabwean passed away. Ruth was born in Cape Town, South Africa. She met her husband Josiah Chinamano, a Zimbabwean nationalist in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1949. They married on 30th September 1950 before relocating to what was then Rhodesia. In 1964 Ruth was detained in the notorious Gonakudzingwa Restriction Camp with her husband and other leading members of the liberation struggle. She spent the next 10 years in and out of detention. She was elected a Member of Parliament following Zimbabwe independence in 1980 and served as a member of the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) central committee.
