THIS IS MY PLEA, and its going out to anyone in Cambridge City who has the power to change. To the council, the universities and to anyone else who SHOULD listen… Last night I heard a new sound. It was played to me by a young Cambridge person, it was just a single tune but it had a flare of brilliance, and a complete unique quality that I have never heard before, it excited me. I want to help the sound grow, to share it with others and to make more similar sounds. With a few gigs and a bit of a fan base that musicians appetite might be wet and they might expand on the sound, explore its potential and generate a scene. That seedling scene, might well be less than one hundred people but it would begin here, in Cambridge, and that’s something people remember. And that scene may well grow and blossom, when that one hundred people drift further afield they espouse the virtue of the place the scene started, they talk of Cambridge with proud voices and that, in turn, encourages like minded and equally talented people to visit the city, some even settle. With more talent more scenes develop they intermingle, even more new and exciting sounds emerge, suddenly the scene is no long small groups but thousands. Suddenly the cities growth is not just calculated by the mere numbers and square brick boxes slapped on the outskirts of the city, it grows culturally and ideologically, it contributes to the wider society and the world. The intelligent and exciting young industries that want to attract intelligent exciting young talent have a nightlife based on a number thriving music scenes that they can use as carrot to make people want to live here. BUT there is a problem, our city now has ONE, YES ONE, medium capacity live music DEVOTED venue. With the closure of the Man in the Moon, Cambridge has yet again come into a dark time. The great joy and cultural strength a healthy music scene brings to a place of living is on the cusp of being crushed. For ten years now I have watched a brain drain of talented and brilliant musicians drift away to other more hospitable climes in search of the scenes and the community that they need to fulfil their potential. THIS IS A SICKNESS, THIS IS SO DAMAGING TO CAMBRIDGE AND ITS PEOPLE I CAN HARDLY BREATH WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT. But there is a solution! Its really really very easy, grant some licenses. Enable some funding. Grant those looking at the the soulless housing estates emerging in Trumpington and elsewhere some incentive to actually live here…. Until the time that the demands for a venue are met I urge those with a love of music and this city to start putting on parties everywhere, live music must thrive, live music must continue
