THIS IS THE DAY!! Today is the official fund-raiser kick-off for the art commissioned by our GCHS Class of 1974 which will be installed at the new Garden City High School!!... And this is what it is all about: We local reunion organizers decided early on in planning “the 40th” that we wanted to offer something meaningful and different for our class to join in, for there to be a layer of something bigger than ourselves this time. Oddly enough, the fund-raising idea for that “something” came first! It would be a mosaic poster containing pictures unique to us, to our years 1956-1974 growing up in Garden City, Kansas. (PLEASE NOTE: The poster which was “unveiled” at the reunion has been revised to add in missing classmates. Checked and cross-checked!! ) And then, We met at the new high school to decide tour highlights and the timing for the August reunion weekend. As we paused in front of a beautiful buffalo bronze (located in the Commons area and donated by the classes of 1961, ‘62, & ‘63), Athletic Director Martin Segovia mentioned his vision for “some kind of buffalo head the athletes would pat for luck” each time they entered the stadium for competition. And the ”something” had found us… We knew immediately that was the opportunity for a legacy gift from our very own class. We commissioned metal fabricator, Rusty Burgardt, to create a welded steel buffalo bust approximately 3’ x 3’ to be installed on the grounds of the high school. It will be accompanied by a descriptive memorial plaque. (Rusty is a son of our classmate Bonnie Heili Burgardt. Rusty’s art has also been commissioned by The Garden City Art Commission and installed in the downtown business district.) Rusty’s bio, along with other memorabilia, will be included with each poster sold. We need to raise an additional $2,900 on top of the $1100 raised during the reunion weekend for a total of $4000. Please be part of this special project: Limited edition poster – THE ABSTRACT BUFFALO IMAGE POSTER contains dozens of photos of Garden City events, places, people and the icons of our time, as well as every class mate who attended Garden City schools , whether they graduated with us or not. It is a stunning piece of art with brilliant color-rendering, suitable for framing. AWESOME to look at - and - INTERACTIVE!!! You will have fun identifying each image. And each image a memory… 100 only, signed and numbered, 30 x 30, $50.00,S & H included, Mail checks payable to “Class of ‘74”, c/o D.V. Douglass Roofing, P. O.
