THIS IS THE REPLY AFTER I HAD SENT A LETTER REGARDING ,[Crusade Against Marine Mammal Exploitation] change.org/petitions/tell-mastercard-st Dear GUEST Thank you very much for your comments regarding animal safety and Tie Down Roping at the Stampede Rodeo. The Calgary Stampede appreciates all guest comments on our programs and events. We understand you feel very passionately about animals. We do as well. We realize that some people have different viewpoints on how people interact with working animals, whether that be for food production, competition or exhibition. The Calgary Stampede is where urban meets rural, putting a spotlight on how we as a society interact with animals. Tie-down roping showcases western and ranching traditions and skills, and is very much accepted and supported by our rodeo fans. Cattle ranching takes places in five continents and tie-down roping skills are used every day to restrain a calf for quick medical treatment, known as “field doctoring.” We value and celebrate these skills as an essential part of ensuring animal welfare and care on the ranch. Large “herd” animals like cattle and horses respond in different ways than humans when presented with different stimuli. The Calgary Stampede uses authoritative experts in livestock behavior to tell us how livestock are actually responding in different experiences. The Stampede’s Animal Care Advisory Panel (comprised of animal care leaders) ensures we’re making the best choices based on the knowledge of leading livestock experts. It is important to recognize that not all tie-down roping is the same. The Calgary Stampede has the most stringent competition rules in place to ensure we can all appreciate the heritage of this important skill while ensuring animal competitors remain safe. We are committed to the proper treatment of animals, and are proud leaders in setting the highest standards of animal care that are now being adopted by other rodeos across North America. Your comments have been included in our daily report to Stampede Senior Management. Regards, Stampede Guest Relations
