THIS IS WHY WE WANTED SAM WILLIAMS Story from the Raiders - Mounties have made it back to back wins after a brilliant display of wet weather football saw them defeat the fifth placed Newtown Jets 34-16 at Mounties Sports Ground on Saturday. The opening period was a fifteen minute battle of the forward packs with the wet conditions ensuring safety first football prevailed. In the 17th minute Newtown crossed under the posts and they led 6-0 after the conversion and eight minutes later they went further in front when several missed tackles by Mounties was punished with a try in the corner which went unconverted and the Jets led 10-0. Mounties kept in the grind and in the 38th minute Frances Vaiotu got the opening points for Mounties when he crossed out wide to make it 10-6 after a brilliant conversion by Sam Williams and in the next set, Shaun Berrigan put in a nice chip and chase before the ball was shifted to new boy Jordan Rapana who got his first try in the VB NSW Cup and after the conversion went wide it was 10-10 at the break. Mounties came out with guns blazing in the 2nd half and on the first set a nice inside ball from Williams saw McIlwrick break the line and head downfield before being tackled just metres from the try line and after a quick play the ball Ryan Carr slid under the defence for a converted try to put Mounties in front 16-10. In the 52nd minute Frances Vaiotu got a double when he was on the receiving end of a cut out pass from Jack Ahern to put Mounties in front 20-10 and in the 58th minute Louis Vaiotu got one back on his older brother when he pounced on a Sam Williams grubber to make it 24-10. Mounties then took complete control of the game when Ryan Carr crossed for his second try of the game when he followed through another Sam Williams grubber kick to slide in under the posts to make it 30-10 after the conversion was successful. Newtown were not going to be shutout however and in the 65th minute they found some space up the middle of the park and scored under the sticks to make it 30-16 with the conversion but in the 73rd minute Mounties put the game out of reach when Louis Vaiotu equalled his brother with two tries for the game when he was on the end of a great backline piece and barged his way over to make it 34-16. The score remained that way until full time, Mounties taking great confidence out of the win with the halves combination of Williams and Carr controlling the play, Shackleton, Berrigan and Kennedy keeping the middle secure and Jordan Rapana and the Vaiotu brothers causing damage outwide. Mounties next game in the VB NSW Cup is against the West Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium next Saturday. In the Ron Massey Cup Mounties suffered their second defeat of the season when they were taken down by a hungry Burwood Nth Ryde oufit 26-14. After having the game shifted to Mounties Sports ground late due to the weather, the visitors struck early when a grubber kick was pounced on and they led 6-0. In the 17th minute Mounties produced a well constructed try when Theo Leato chimed into a sweeping backline move and sliced through to score an unconverted try and make it 6-4. Burwood then scored two tries just before the break and went into the second half with an 18-4 lead however Mounties seemed to find another gear and in the 43rd minute Malakia Watene Zalezniak dived over out wide and soon after Tim Tautaau did the same to reduce the deficit to 18-14 and it looked ominous for Burwood. To their credit the visitors stuck solid and after an all in brawl they slotted a penalty goal to take their lead to 20-14 and in the 75th minute they put the result in no doubt when they scored another converted try. In the Sydney Shield, Mounties put together a solid performance to hold Burwood out to a 12-10 lead at the half way mark of the game. In a side crippled by injury they kept turning up for each other and waited until the final few minutes to post the winning try to take the points 24-20 with Brandon Bonnici and Marco Muscatello both having big games. Next week, both team venture to Cabramatta on Sunday where they will attempt to pull off the double in the local derby.
