THIS ISNT A JOKE! its an actual email sent from my CEO this morning. Its touching and its so true about how we stigmatize depression. Unfortunately, my culture believes that people with depression can just snap out of it and some even believe depressed people shouldnt be taking meds and can simply just pray themselves out of it. I am in no way discounting the power of prayer, but I do believe in prayer with works and that God provides the medicine, doctors, etc... for healing. I am hoping that this letter from our CEO will touch the hearts of many who do not understand the disease and also encourages those who are struggling with this disease to seek help immediately! BE BLESSED! Heres his email: Team: This morning, as I always do, I reached in the cabinet for medication that I take for Clinical Depression. Its a part of my routine that helps me enjoy our world and function normally. And this morning, as I have never done before, I am helping our dearest friends prepare for the funeral of their son -- a young man who took his own live a few days ago. His friends and family never knew the depth of his despair. And, for whatever reason, he couldnt or wouldnt reach out for the proper help he needed. Our friends now must put the pieces of their lives back together but there will always be one huge part of their lives that will never be there again. Believe it or not, one in four people suffer from it! Read that again -- 1 out of 4 people! This disease affects the most important organ in your body -- the brain. Its a physical problem just like high blood pressure or cancer. Unfortunately, our society doesnt consider it as a physical illness like it really is. WE MUST STOP THE TERRIBLE STIGMA THAT SURROUNDS THE DREADFUL DISEASE OF DEPRESSION. For any of you who often feel alone or want to just crawl in a hole and never come out... For any of you who often cant think or process information clearly like you think you should... For any of you who cant feel the love of your family and friends nor have the ability to show it... PLEASE ask someone for help. And for you guys out there who think admitting to a problem is a sign of weakness, dont be stupid -- ask for help. A REAL man loves his family and friends enough to seek help. A REAL man wants his life as normal as it can be so he can earn money to support his family. A REAL man will face his weakness so that he can be stronger. For those of you who dont suffer from this devastating disease, reach out and try to help anyone who you feel may need it. You may just save that persons life. We cant save our friends son. But we can do something in memory of him and for his family. EDUCATE YOURSELF. OPEN THE CLOSET DOORS IN YOUR FAMILY OR CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. TALK OPENLY ABOUT THE DISEASE AND POSSIBLE PROBLEMS YOU OR A LOVED ONE MIGHT HAVE. GET HELP! For ANYONE who wants to talk with a person who has the disease, you can privately contact me. I think youll find that speaking with someone who is in the same boat as you are might just be a great first step to saving your own life.
