THIS JUST IN! The emails had started to pour in. After the last un-clicked inbox notification had been clicked, there were over 250 applicants vying for the 5 available roles. In a pithy 4-hour stretch, more than 90 performers squeezed into the small waiting room, hallway, and stairwell of the former offices of Fraser Studios. The turnout was more than I had ever anticipated - hence the pithy 4-hour stretch booked a month in advance - what with the usual reasons - usually unoriginal excuses - of suddenly-remembered doctors appointments, birthdays, road trips, funerals, parades, weddings, a variety of vehicular malfunctions, and all sorts of stories that all basically meant that whomever they were was canceling. I had seen some familiar faces - ultimately casting Robert Nolan, Kelly-Marie Murtha, Eric Hicks, and Brian Quintero - and plenty of new ones - including a pair of actresses who just happened to be walking by the studio front, asked the last person in line on the stairwell what the commotion was all about, learning about the audition, running home, and running back with their headshot, resume, and quick review of someone elses sides. Then one face poked her head through the door, one that - truthfully - I didnt recall if I had seen in the chaos of the 250-plus submissions. We exchanged brief introductions, chatted about the character and direction even less, and she finally took the only seat in the centre of the - by then - stuffy room. The monologue was half of what existed in the full script, but was enough to give me an idea if the beats, the emotional arcs, the context, the subtext, and all that I had never thought of were thought of, considered, and brought to life by her. As she exhaled the words, she inhaled the character, breathing out Sarah Cunningham and breathing in Ellen (a similar in impact yet dissimilar in character that took place almost exactly two years later during the USHER, THE USHER auditions; but thats another story for another - hopefully - nomination). I had always told her - and others who bothered to listen and yet likely didnt see or hear what I saw and heard, such is the curse of someone with a vision and an ear - that it was her voice that captured the essence of Ellen... ...and now that voice has been nominated for BEST ACTRESS at the 8th Macabre Faire Film Festival (Winter 2015) as part of the NY Horror Show in Long Island. In addition to the nomination for Best Actress, CANSWER, the second feature film from Arcilesi Films, has also been nominated for Best Cinematography. Thank you to the festival founders, organizers, and judges at the Macabre Faire Film Festival and NY Horror Show for the privilege of heralding a laurel and the honour of receiving the pair of nominations.
